AI is no longer a future conversation for healthcare teams. It is already showing up in documentation, decision support, administrative work, analytics, and everyday productivity tools.That shift matters because healthcare organizations are not just adopting software. They are introducing new workflow decisions, new data risks, and new expectations for oversight. ONC’s HTI-1 final rule added transparency requirements for AI and predictive algorithms in certified health IT, and ONC has noted how widely certified health IT is used across hospitals and office-based physician settings. At the same time, NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework is designed not only for developers, but also for organizations deploying and using AI systems.<h2 id="fac17767-77b9-45fc-8c29-62e7f8d2fc89" data-toc-id="fac17767-77b9-45fc-8c29-62e7f8d2fc89" style="font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Readiness Is About More Than Access</h2>That is why training matters now.In healthcare, readiness is not just about whether a tool works. It is about whether the people using it understand what the tool is for, what data should and should not go into it, when human review is required, and how to respond when something goes wrong.HIPAA’s Security Rule requires covered entities and business associates to protect electronic protected health information through administrative, physical, and technical safeguards. HHS also states that regulated entities must train workforce members on their security policies and procedures. HHS also notes that this analysis feeds the broader risk management process and that organizations should assess whether a new evaluation is needed when the security environment changes, including when new technology is adopted.That is why AI adoption is not just a technical issue. OCR has also emphasized the importance of regular HIPAA training that is specific to the organization and relevant to workforce members’ job duties.NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework follows the same logic by treating AI risk management as a continuous practice through functions like Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage.In practical terms, that means effective training should be role-based, scenario-based, and tied to real workflows rather than abstract policy language alone.<h2 id="30cf81d4-0b7f-4c6b-84eb-4e84d86b52e5" data-toc-id="30cf81d4-0b7f-4c6b-84eb-4e84d86b52e5" style="font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">The Teams That Succeed Will Be the Ones That Prepare Well</h2>The organizations that move fastest with AI will not necessarily be the ones that succeed with it.The ones that succeed will be the ones that give teams clear rules, practical examples, approved tools, and stronger judgment. In healthcare, AI readiness is not created by access alone.
