This is an inference based on HHS minimum-necessary guidance and NIST’s risk-based approach, not a standalone federal rule that lists “approved” AI use cases.</p><p>By contrast, risk rises when teams start pasting live patient messages, intake details, clinical narratives, or other identifiable information into external tools without a clearly governed setup. Once that happens, the issue is no longer just productivity. Is the tool approved for this type of data? Is there a policy for how outputs should be reviewed, stored, or shared? These questions line up well with NIST’s Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage model because they force teams to think about context, data, controls, and accountability before the tool is used.</p><p>That kind of pause is valuable even when no patient data is involved. NIST notes that generative AI can create privacy and security risks through inference, memorization, or misleading output, which means human review still matters.
